Buying Guide: Biker Helmets

Riding a motorcycle is an adventure in itself. The fresh air, open scenery, the twists and turns of the stretch, it all sums up to a refreshing experience. Just as much as you love hopping on your bike for a long ride or tooting around the town, your love for the helmet should stand true as well. This protective gear will ensure that you take another thousand journeys, all safe and sound.

A good helmet is a great investment

A good helmet won’t prevent the crash, but it is going to protect you and reduce the risk of serious injuries. There won’t be wind blasting in your face, which honestly hurts after the first few moments of glory. There won’t be noise roaring in your ears and the helmet is also going to deflect the road dirt for you. Known to reduce rider fatigues, bikers’ helmet will also shield you against the abrupt weather changes.

How to choose the best one?

Whether you are just starting, or you are an old-timer tarmac grinder, the right helmet is your buddy. Choosing the right one is not just about how cool it looks or the size of it, but it is about finding an all-in-one package the serves the purpose right and doesn’t look bad either.

Type – Full-face, modular or offroad

There are a lot of varieties when it comes to biker helmets. You might come across a full-faced, modular, half-faced, off-road, or a flip front helmet. You can decide on the options that offer optimum comfort.

For a biker, the full-face variant is a more practical choice, but if you are riding a scooter, the half-faced will suffice as well. Modular helmets are known for impressive protection and practicality, off-road helmets look the coolest and are sporty. Now, choosing a helmet on face value is not a worthy bargain. Try all but choose one which makes up a complete package.

Comfort and Fit

Never underestimate the importance of the size, when it comes to the biker’s helmet. The helmet has to appropriately fit the head. If the helmet is too loose, it can simply slide off at the minutest imbalance and if it is too loose, the experience is going to be a suffocating one.

The straps should be easy but not vague, to open and close. Also, make sure to look for ventilation vents and comfortable padding.

Certification

Helmets are necessary and understanding the urgency, the markets are flooded with helmets that do not stand a chance on the safety protocol. Once you are done choosing your style, look for the proper certification.

You need to look for the certification mark. A certification mark makes sure that the helmet is approved by the corresponding safety agency and has been rigorously checked for impact and penetration capabilities.

Some of the most notable certifications in the industry are DOT, SNELL, ECE etc.

Material

Most of the biker’s helmets are made out of the fiber-glass composites while the high-end options use carbon composites and Kevlar. The helmets should have an air mesh to keep the helmet breathable and dry.

A plastic helmet is a poor material choice as they are easily breakable. Look for durable helmet choices.

Coverage & Visor

Coverage means the area which is going to receive protection with the use of a helmet. Full faced helmets, for example, provide ample protection to head, neck and face.

Visors are available in tinted and clear shades. You can choose a type that suits you. For example, a dark tinted visor is not a good match for night riding. Ask for the UV protection visors which are good at resisting scratches too besides the UV radiations.

Bottom line…

Choose your helmet with some research. Do not just buy any helmet because is an unfortunate event of a crash, helmets begin to work and they must be ready to face the grinding road or brutal impacts. This is why we say that helmets are a worthy investment.
