Choosing Biker-Friendly Accommodation

Choosing the right accommodation when traveling is a big enough challenge because you have to balance budget, amenities, and convenience. But when you’re on a motorbike tour, things get a little more complicated. In addition to the usual features, you also need a safe place to store your bike and, in many areas of the world, that’s not so easy to find.

Experts generally recommend booking a room in a dedicated moto hotel when planning your route and this is indeed the ideal option because they offer indoor garages. But while countries like the US, Austria, and Germany have a strong biker culture, other countries aren’t so big on biker-friendly accommodation and simply stopping by with a motorbike can raise some suspicious looks.

So don’t panic if you didn’t see a moto hotel on your route. It doesn’t matter if you’re booking a hotel room or guest house. All you need to do is pay attention to these details:

Location

Not surprisingly, location is the first and most important thing on the list. In the best-case scenario, your accommodation should be within a reasonable distance from local race circuits and biker gathering spots. If they’re famous, these places should already have a moto hotel nearby but be sure to book in advance because rooms fill up quickly. Don’t be discouraged if no rooms are left. Usually, you can find plenty of apartments and B&b’s in the area, at a lower cost.

Security

When you’re out riding on two wheels, your motorbike is your most prized possession so it would be pretty irresponsible to book a room without considering safety. First, double-check online if the accommodation is in a safe neighborhood with a low crime rate. Second, choose a property with gated private parking and surveillance cameras. If that’s not possible, take off all your luggage and bring it with you in the room. It’s an extra effort, but better safe than sorry. And last, but not least, no matter where you park your motorbike, always cover it for the night. Even if there’s no risk of theft, the cover will protect it from rain, dust, and curious guests.

Technical assistance

Even when you inspect your motorbike thoroughly before departure, accidents can happen. Braking problems, weird vibrations, or the engine halting in the middle of the road can ruin your tour, not to mention risk your safety, which is why it pays off to book a room in a place that offers technical assistance, if possible. Again, this is where moto hotels are the superior choice because they usually go the extra mile and offer the full package: on-site technical assistance, direct contact with mechanics and workshops, even motorbike rentals. If you couldn’t find such a hotel on your route, then check at least that the next best accommodation isn’t in the middle of nowhere and you have access to a mechanic if necessary.

When in doubt, always ask

Not sure if that awesome accommodation you found is biker-friendly?. Don’t forget to read the reviews carefully and ask for recommendations on biker forums because the community will definitely give you some good suggestions.
