Top tips for keeping your motorcycle secure

Thousands of motorcycles are stolen throughout the UK each year all for different purposes, joyriders, parts or to sell. An unsecured motorcycle will be a prime target for thieves, and they can simply be wheeled away if they are not properly secure. There are many ways to prevent the theft of your prize possession and below are seven tips for keeping your motorcycle secure.

Alarms and Immobilisers

An alarm or immobiliser is one of the best ways to deter thieves and secure your motorcycle. Many motorbike alarms can be professionally fitted and will put off even the most persistent of thieves. Another bonus of a motorcycle alarm or immobiliser is that it can reduce your insurance premiums. However, motorcycles today are incredibly complex when it comes to the electronics so make sure that your alarm or immobiliser is fitted by a trained technician.

Motorbike Locks

Motorcycle locks are a simple and cost-effective way to keep your bike secure. Many of these locks are incredibly strong and cannot be broken or cut, at least not without damaging the motorcycle itself. When it comes to locking your motorcycle make sure it is to an immovable object such as a lamppost or ground anchor. Most importantly try and thread the lock through your frame as motorcycles are often stolen for parts.

Mark Your Motorcycle

Another way to secure your motorcycle is to mark it with your VIN number (vehicle identification). By marking parts of your bike, it can be hard to re-sell them if they are stolen as they can be traced back to the owner. One of the easiest ways to do this is with a UV pen, alternatively, you can use a more sophisticated method such as a Datatag or Smartwater. Either way if you want to secure your motorcycle then this method is a must.

Store It Away

It is amazing just how many motorcycles are left out in plain view on driveways or the roadside. If you have a garage, then storing your bike in there is one way to keep it secure. Of course, you need to make sure that your garage also has the necessary security either in the form of a strong lock or alarm system.

Remove Equipment

One clever way to secure your motorcycle is to remove the spark plug or HT cap. This does not cost anything to do and is extremely easy, but you should not rely on this method alone. Making sure that your bike is locked as well as following the above security tips will help make sure your motorcycle is properly secure and avoid the stress and cost of having it stolen.
